John Santana Brings Compassion and Commitment to His Role as Board Member

For John Santana, joining the board of The Father Center of New Jersey (TFCNJ) wasn’t just an act of service—it was deeply personal. “I’ve seen the incredible work this organization has done,” he says. “As a dad who grew up in a single-parent household without a father, the mission of The Father Center of New Jersey really sank in with me. There’s no blueprint for being a parent, but when we equip men with tools and self-worth, we help shape generations.”

John brings a wealth of experience to TFCNJ. Currently the Director of Strategic Partnerships & Operations at the United Way of Greater Mercer County, he has spent decades in government, nonprofit, and public service roles. He has worked with the American Red Cross, the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, and Bellevue Hospital in NYC, and served two governors and a U.S. senator. But it’s his community-minded heart that drives his board work at TFCNJ.

“It doesn’t feel like work,” he says. “Helping people, connecting with organizations, and figuring out how to make folks better—it’s something I’m proud to be part of.” John believes the services of The Father Center of New Jersey are not only vital but in increasing demand across the state. “We’re not just focusing on current fathers—we’re shaping young men to be future fathers. It starts with letting them know they are worthy, that they have value, and that they have a role to play in their families and in society.”

John’s perspective is shaped by his lived experience. “I haven’t had many father figures in my life, but I’ve tried to be the best dad I can be. My kids are my life,” he says. “As a family, we love board games, movies, camping, and exploring Disney with our annual passes.”

Through his role on the board, John is helping TFCNJ expand its reach, so that more men have the opportunity to become present, engaged and empowered fathers. “There’s beauty in reminding fathers that they’re not forgotten,” he says. “We let them know they matter. We help them step out of the shadows.”

For John, that’s what being part of The Father Center of New Jersey is all about: creating lasting, positive change for fathers, families and communities across New Jersey.
