Douglas Palmer to be honored as one of our 20th Anniversary Platinun Dads

Douglas Palmer, former mayor of Trenton

Douglas Palmer made history in 1990 as Trenton’s first African American mayor, serving five consecutive terms until 2010. Born and raised in Trenton, Palmer graduated from Hampton University with a degree in business management. His administration focused on revitalizing the city through initiatives like the development of affordable housing, the creation of the city’s first hotel conference center, and the establishment of the Trenton Office of Policy Studies, now the John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy. Palmer also served as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors from 2006 to 2008, advocating for urban policy and gun safety reforms.

The Father Center of New Jersey is proud to recognize Palmer as a 2025 Platinum Dad, honoring his legacy of leadership, mentorship and commitment to empowering families. His dedication to public service and community uplift embodies the values the organization strives to instill in fathers across New Jersey. As Bryan Evans, CEO of The Father Center of New Jersey, noted, this year’s gala is “a powerful reflection of the impact that fatherhood, mentorship and community leadership have on the lives of families across New Jersey.”

The June 6 celebration will feature keynote speaker Dwayne Redmond of Bank of America, live music and a tribute to all honorees, including Palmer, whose work continues to inspire generations of fathers and leaders
